The 1879 opera Eugene Onegin, by Tchaikovsky, based on the story, is perhaps the version that most people are familiar with. There are many recordings of the score, and it is one of the most commonly performed operas in the world. Ballet Eugene Onegin is a well-known example of lyric opera, to which Tchaikovsky added music of a dramatic nature.
But only a little more wild than for Svetlana Aksenova as Tatyana. Her gorgeously pure soprano generated the intense white heat so essential in conveying the steely resolve her character needs to resist Onegin’s persistent advances in the opera’s final scene. The pain of unrequited love is portrayed unforgettably by two of opera’s greatest stars. Soprano Renée Fleming is musically and dramatically radiant as the shy Tatiana, who falls in love with the worldly Eugene Onegin, played with devastating charisma by baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Their mesmerizing vocalism and chemistry explode in one of opera’s most heartbreaking final scenes.
